LSC Alumni Averett and Boyd Garner All-America Honors
KANSAS City, Kan.  For the second-straight season, the St. Edward’s women’s soccer team has a player on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America Team. The difference this year is the Hilltoppers have two representatives on the team. Both Janae Averett and Kelly Boyd were both named third-team all-America. In 2009, Kim Abbott was named first-team all-america.

Averett (Senior, Round Rock, Texas) was named Daktronics first-team all-region, NSCAA first-team all-region, and Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Year. She finished second on the Hilltopper squad with 11 goals and 25 points. On the season, the forward had five game-winning goals. She did all this while missing four matches during the season.

"Janae is a dynamic athlete with the speed and acceleration to succeed against most defensive players, head coach Nick Cowell said. She has matured into a player who gives 100% effort on the field, both offensively and defensively, which is what is required to play in our 1-3-4-3 system. Janae's goal production has increased every year as her confidence has increased. As a freshman, she scored 7% of the team's goals. Her percentage increased to 10% as a sophomore, 17% as a junior and 22% as a senior. I hope that Janae also decides to keep playing after graduation in Sweden, just like last year's seniors were able."

Boyd (Senior, Round Rock, Texas) was also named Daktronics first-team all-region, NSCAA first-team all-region, Heartland Conference Player of the Year, and Conference Defensive Player of the Year. She anchored a defense that produced 11 shutouts and held the opposition to only 13 goals, 89 shots and 45 shots on goal in 21 matches. The defender also had one assist to go along with her one game-winning goal.

"Kelly Boyd has been the rock of our defensive efforts over the past four years,” Cowell said. She is a great athlete and has really taken on the role of being a communicator and leader on the field. She is aggressive but also smart and is a winner. Kelly is the quintessential student-athlete, succeeding in the classroom as a Forensic Science major and a 4-year starter on the field. I hope that Kelly is able to continue to play at a high level after graduation, possibly in Sweden."

The Hilltoppers finished the season tying the school record for victories with a 17-2-2 record. For the first time in program history, St. Edward’s advanced to the Elite Eight. They also hosted a NCAA Regional for the second time in school history, and the third and fourth rounds for the first time. The future looks bright for St. Edward’s as the Hilltoppers lose seven seniors, in which only three were starters off of this year’s team.
