Austin, June 19th – On a rainy Wednesday evening at RRMC Field #7, Lonestar SC USL-W bid farewell to their home crowd for the season in an exciting rematch against SA Athenians. The stakes were high as the teams clashed once again following their previous encounter, where Lonestar emerged victorious with a narrow 3-2 win.
The match kicked off under the heavy rain, setting the stage for an intense match up on the pitch. Lonestar wasted no time asserting their dominance, opening the scoring early in the first 10 minutes. Tristyn Cabello struck first, with a well-placed goal past the Athenians’ goalkeeper.
However, Athenians quickly capitalized on a temporary setback for Lonestar. Just five minutes after their initial goal, Athenians found the equalizer. Taking advantage of Lonestar playing with 10 players due to an injury that forced Tristyn Cabello off the field, the Athenians seized the opportunity to level the score. Zara Dominguez was eventually brought in to replace the scorer.
Lonestar proceeded in creating numerous scoring opportunities until the end of the first half. The only change during half time was Katelyn Chrisman (GK) replacing Grace. Besides that, the team kept the same ideas and principals. It was Analisa Lujan, who ultimately broke the deadlock with a decisive goal within 15 minutes in the second half, which proved to be the match-winner. Haley Shaw, Trianne Cooper, and CJ Brown were all brought after to reinforce the defensive structure and secured the game.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Coach Erick Villalba expressed his pride in the players’ execution of the game plan, particularly noting their focus following a video session. “I’m incredibly proud of how the girls stuck to our game plan,” Villalba commented post-match. “Their discipline and execution were key factors in the huge amount of chances created. All we’ve got to do is work on converting those chances into more goals.”
Looking ahead, Coach Dewi Hardman extended an invitation to supporters to follow the team in their final two away games of the season. Lonestar SC USL-W will face SA Athenians once again on June 26th before concluding their campaign against AHFC Royals on the 29th. Hardman finished with: “Now, we look forward to finishing strong on the road.”
